History of CLA Czech Republic
The history of CLA began in 1993 in Liberec, where Václav Podzimek and Jan Šuma founded the company Podzimek & Šuma. Four years later, in 1997, they expanded to Prague in partnership with McDowell, forming a new company, McDowell, Podzimek & Šuma. At the beginning of the new millennium, the Czech Republic’s planned accession to the European Union paved the way for a merger with the Belgian company VGD, leading to the establishment of VGD, s.r.o. in 2001.
In 2003, the existing offices in Liberec and Prague were joined by a new branch in Olomouc, and in the same year, the first entity, VGD Corporate Finance, was established. In the following years, mergers took place with Grenna (2006), Fasco (2010), and Mivo (2022). Over time, additional entities were created, including VGD Appraisal (2011), VGD IT Solutions (2015), VGD Technologies (2016), and VGD Legal (2018). In the summer of 2023, the VGD group became a member of CLA Global, one of the world’s leading networks of independent accounting and advisory firms.
In the same year that McDowell, Podzimek & Šuma was established, Jakub Kovář, originally an accountant for foreign companies in the Czech Republic, became an auditor at HZ Audit. He met Rudolf Černý there, and both later moved to an auditing company, which is a member of the international network of independent auditors, Nexia International. It was there that they met Jiří Smělý and Petra Kramperová, and in 2021, they founded ONE, a highly successful auditing and tax start-up, consisting of AUDIT ONE s.r.o. and TAX ONE s.r.o. companies.
In 2021, ONE and VGD came together in a project, namely in VGD Appraisal, s.r.o., a valuation office. Their collaboration was highly successful, and in 2023 both companies agreed to create CLA Czech Republic, a unique one-stop-shop consulting project in the Czech Republic, which entered the global market on January 1, 2025.
